I can't dance but my friends can.

I used to joke that I was like Elaine from Seinfeld who once danced at a work event and it was career limiting. That’s me. Somedays I’m ok, but most days my dancing is off, awkward and embarrassing. My friends are good and this last weekend they were on fire with a throwback to college days and doing the line dance.

We were all together at a fundraiser and the lead singer of the band Misty Blues was a college friend of mine who sang at my wedding. I know I’ve talked about her before as I’m a fan of her musical career and success. They performed to raise money for the DC Central Kitchen, which I later learned was involved in mentoring Jose Andres the talented World Kitchen chef.

My point is that when you think about building a network of relationships, surround yourself with people who are more talented than you or will take the time to teach you how to improve. Be open to feedback. Ask for input on how to get better at your career or your business. We all have room to grow.

Later on i did ask a few to show me how to do the line dance again. I was rusty and not ready for video, but I alwaays give it my best shot. When you network, have the same approach and you will rock the stage someday too.
